Symptoms of ear wax:

Discomfort or pain in your ear

Itching due to dryness

Hearing loss or a feeling of fullness

Tinnitus (buzzing or ringing in the ears)

Hearing aid blockage

Vertigo (dizziness)

What causes ear wax?

Wax (cerumen) is produced in the outer third of the ear canal by wax glands and is the body’s antiseptic for ears, trapping dust, debris and bacteria. Wax will naturally migrate out of the ear, but sometimes can gradually build up causing the ear to become blocked.

New wax is soft, moist and light in colour, whereas wax that has become lodged in the ear appears darker and is harder, thus preventing the natural movement of the wax out of the ear. This can cause a loss of hearing and discomfort. If this sounds like something you may be experiencing, please get in touch.

Why does the wax build up?

There are a number of reasons for ear wax build up – these are a few of the most common factors.

Using cotton buds, ear plugs or hearing aids. The wax can be pushed further down the ear preventing the natural migration process

Narrow or damaged ear canals

Excess ear hair

As we age the ear wax produced can change in consistency. Generally harder and more sticky

Excessive exposure to dust, dirt or water

Over active production of cerumen due to medical conditions such as eczema

Having an inflammation of your ear canal (otitis externa)

Methods of ear wax removal

At Clear Hear Devon we are qualified in all techniques to remove wax, microsuction, irrigation and dry removal.

Following a brief discussion about your health and hearing, we will examine your ear canals using an otoscope to determine the amount of wax in your ear. We will then recommend the most appropriate method for you, to provide you with the most safe and comfortable outcome.

Microsuction

We specialise in Microsuction which is considered the gold standard of ear wax removal. It is the safest way to remove ear wax. Your clinician uses a fine tip to gently vacuum out the wax and any debris in the canal.

No water is required for this procedure and it is very quick and comfortable, usually only taking a few minutes.

Ear irrigation services Devon

Irrigation

Using an electronic irrigator which regulates the pressure of the warm water and gently flushes out the wax.

Starting on the lowest pressure the clinician will begin to gently disturb and break up the wax by squirting a controlled stream into your ear canal. If the wax is very compacted the pressure can be safely increased to remove stubborn wax.

Dry Removal

Using an instrument such as a curette or forceps we manually remove wax and debris from the ear canal when it sits near the entrance.

If appropriate, we may use more than one of these methods to remove your wax. When your wax is cleared we will check the health of your ears and can advise on any aftercare that may be required. We recommend, where possible, that oil is used in the ear for 3 to 4 days before coming into clinic for any of the techniques listed above. This will help to soften the wax for easier extraction.
